Additional Information
Ancient Mayan Ruins
The only major Mayan ruin built on the sea-shore, the 1,400 year old complex called Tulum is magnificent. Sand-colored temples-some close to 10 floors high - perched above the ocean. Guides tell of scientifically recorded equinoxes when the rising and setting sun shines precisely through astronomically calculated windows. Less than 600 years after the birth of Christ, this large city was constructed, making it by some calculations, the oldest continuously occupied city in the entire Western Hemisphere. Mayan priests, warriors and their families lived here for more than 1,000 years. This is one site where it is worth the money to pay for a guided tour. It gets VERY hot at Tulum. We suggest going early in the day and taking lots of water and wearing your walking shoes.
Eco Parks
Xpu-ha - Just a few minutes away is Xpu Ha, one of the prettiest and most peaceful beaches on the Caribbean. To the North, only a fifteen-minute walk away, is the Xpu Ha' Lagoon, from which you can visit one of the largest cenotes on the Riviera Maya, also within walking distance (10 minutes), and which spans almost 500 meters deep within the tropical jungle.
Xcaret - This beautiful eco-park is located 9 miles North of Puerto Aventuras and was once an ancient Mayan port and offers the following attractions: underground river you can snorkel through, bat cave, marine turtles, apiary, mushroom farm, tropical trail, orchids, butterfly pavilion, reptiles and sharks, coral reef aquarium, stables, jaguars and mammals, wild bird breeding aviary, aquarium, lagoons, beach, scuba diving, inlet, sea trek, dolphins snorkeling, ecological tours, snuba, wading pools. The evening show takes you back in time to visit the Mayan as they once were, plus offers a typical Mexican Folklore show performed in an open air theater.
Xel-ha - Another fantastic eco-park, which was once a Mayan port. Here you can enjoy: Underwater discovery, Nature, exploration, adventure, relaxation, an extraordinary network of natural pools, waterways, islands, caves and ancient ruins. Entrance price includes access to all areas of the park, the train to the river, float tubes, life vests and parking. There is an additional charge for the dolphin swim, restaurants and massages.
Night Life
Puerto Aventuras is private and sophisticated and if you're looking for a quiet evening, PA is definitely the place. If you're looking for a little more action, check out Playa del Carmen. This happnin' little town, only about 15 minutes north of Puerto Aventuras on 307, is the perfect place to spend an evening. Fifth Avenue is a large pedestrian walkway lined with trees, funky shops, restaurants, and bars. By day you will find countless open-air booths and shops vibrant with activity. By night this fun town kicks up its heels and takes a bite out of life.
This is a place where the people watching is as much fun as the other activities. Lots of European backpackers, 70s throwbacks, and the young at heart call this town home. If you listen you are likely to hear Italian, German, French as well as English and Spanish being spoken here. Playa also has a pretty beach as well as a ferry into Cozumel. Lots of people come early in the morning, enjoy Cozumel by day and finish up in Playa del Carmen for their evening meal and drinks. As in all of Mexicoeven the nicest restaurants accept the most casual attire.
