What is Kalutara known for?

The main hub of Mangosteen cultivation in Sri Lanka also has a reputation for housing some of the most ancient and interesting cultural attractions around. If history doesn’t get you going, this is still no reason to write off a trip to the city! With sea turtles, caves, waterfalls and beaches, Kalutara is also an attractive destination for nature lovers.

What’s the best time of year to visit Kalutara?

For the best weather

Kalutara’s average temperature fluctuates very little throughout the year and hovers between 27 and 30 C, no matter what the season. However, the city sees a significant amount of rainfall during certain months. If you want to stay dry during your trip, visit in January, February, March, June, July or August.

To beat the crowds

Kalutara is busiest in the months of July and August, as many people time their vacation to coincide with the holidays. If you want the city but not the crowds, go in February, March or June. This way you can still enjoy clear blue skies and warm sunshine, without so many other people around!

Pay a visit to Kalutara Bodihya

A sacred Bodhi tree in the heart of Kalutara, Kalutara Bodhiya is one of the most important Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka. This holy tree, thought to have sprouted from one of 32 sacred saplings, is visited by hundreds of Buddhists each and every day. Right next door is the beautiful Kalutara Chaithya, an enormous stupa and Buddhist temple.

This incredible spiritual site can be found near the Kalu River and the surrounding scenery is almost as attractive as the temple itself. Take a few hours to stroll through the grounds and enjoy its peace, quiet and tranquillity.

Wander through Richmond Castle

This 120-year-old Edwardian Mansion is a must-see if you happen to be in Kalutara. Located just 2 km outside of the city, Richmond Castle was built between 1900 and 1910 and is one-of-a-kind in Sri Lanka.

Take a tour of the castle and grounds to learn more about the mansion’s fascinating history and unique architecture. You’ll marvel at the incredible beauty of the site, all supplies for which were sourced from other countries. Bathe in the Thudugala Ella Waterfall

When the Sri Lankan summer gets a little too warm, make your way to Thudugala Ella waterfall to cool off! The waterfall is a popular bathing spot, used by locals and visitors alike and a great place to escape the midday heat. As an added bonus, the surroundings are spectacular with lush green jungle, spotless pools and stunning exotic birds.

Thudugala Ella Waterfall is located just 11 km outside of Kalutara and is easy to reach by car or taxi – check it out while you’re in town!

Explore the Fa Hien Caves

The Fa Hien Caves are a little off the beaten path in Kalutara. Nevertheless, this sie of historical archaeological importance is definitely worth a visit!

The Fa Hien Caves were discovered to be the home of prehistoric remains, with ancient burial sites uncovered here in 1968. Several other artefacts, such as stone tools and remnants of fireplaces were also found in the caves. Today, the site is a fascinating place to visit and see where these momentous archaeological digs took place. Take a short hike to reach the cave and immerse yourself in the historical atmosphere!

Where to stay in Kalutara

To be near the beach

The coastline in Kalutara isn’t known for being especially beautiful. To get your beach fix, consider renting a villa in nearby Bentota, instead. From here it’s easy to travel into the city (especially if you rent a car during your trip). This is a great way to enjoy all the cultural attractions of Kalutara without forfeiting your beach time – perfect!
