Things to see and do in Mirissa
Step up your surfing skills
The small waves and gentle swell around Sri Lanka’s southeast coast are perfect for learning the basics on a board. Once you’re feeling confident, however, it’s time to put those new skills to the test! The surf spots around Mirissa are a step up from those found in nearby Weligama. Although there are still places for beginners to get some practice, the Weligama Beach surf break is ideal for intermediate surfers. The reef break here creates larger, more powerful waves to challenge your technique, but the bottom is still soft and sandy. Alternatively, head over to nearby Midigama Beach for fewer people and less crowded waters.
Many guesthouses and hotels around Mirissa also offer surf lessons, making this the perfect place to sharpen up your skills!
Make the most of Mirissa’s party scene
Unlike most other places in Sri Lanka, Mirissa has a lively atmosphere after dark. Get the party started at sunset when most of Mirissa’s bars have happy hour offers on drinks and cocktails. Enjoy a few drinks in the idyllic setting of Mirissa beach as the sun sets and soak in the energetic party vibes of the beachside before stepping things up a gear. The main party in Mirissa rotates between bars, so keep your eyes peeled for fireworks and light displays to guide you there!
Seize your chance to spot a whale
Mirissa is one of the best places in the world to catch a glimpse of the earth’s largest mammal, the Blue whale. From October to May, these majestic giants make their way north to the warm, tropical waters of the Indian Ocean and their breeding grounds. Their migratory route passes close by the south coast of Sri Lanka, so anyone staying in Mirissa has the perfect opportunity to spot one!
With only 10,000 Blue whales left in the world, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see one up close. There are several companies offering whale watching tours around Mirissa, most of which have excellent knowledge about these colossal creatures and their habitats. Even if you don’t see a Blue whale, you’re unlikely to be disappointed. The oceans of Sri Lanka house a diverse array of cetaceans including Sperm whales, Bride whales and Killer whales. Several varieties of dolphin are also commonly spotted here, so you’re sure to experience a whole host of marine life!
Take a boat safari around the Mirissa Eco Lagoon
When it’s time for a break from the beach, head to the Eco Lagoon for a day of peace and tranquillity. Here you can take a boat ride safari through the lushest surroundings imaginable, from endless rice paddies to dense jungle foliage.
This is a perfect way to explore the vibrant nature and wildlife around the lagoon, and you’re likely to spot many fascinating animals. The lagoon is home to several bird, lizard and mammal species, such as eagles, water monitors and monkeys. The highlight of the trip, however, has to be sunset. The spectacular view over the lake as the sun sinks is breathtaking, but it’s the fruit bats that steal the show! These enormous bats (also known as Flying Foxes) take wing at dusk, soaring overhead in their thousands during the last light of day. It’s the perfect finale for a day at the lagoon and a unique experience that mustn’t be missed out on!
Go snorkelling at Turtle Bay
If you’re not in town during whale season, don’t worry! Mirissa has plenty of incredible marine wildlife to marvel at. Turtle Bay is the best place in town to spot the sea turtles that live and breed in the area. Take your fins and snorkel down to the beach to see if you can spot these beautiful creatures as they glide through the crystal clear waters.
Time your trip carefully, though; the bay is only swimmable at low tide as the sand disappears entirely at high tide. Arrive early in the morning for your best chance to see the turtles!
Off the beaten track in Mirissa…
Capture the sunset at Coconut Tree Hill
Coconut Tree Hill (or the palm tree grove, as it’s also known) is, undoubtedly, the best place in Mirissa to catch the sunset. This sandy hill dotted with coconut palms overlooks a vast expanse of the ocean, giving you a 270-degree view of endless blue waves. If the scenery alone doesn’t mesmerize you, the sunset surely will! The fire-streaked sky and waters of the Indian ocean framed by the blackly silhouetted palms is the stuff of dreams for Insta-enthusiasts. For unforgettable holiday shots, make your way over in the morning or evening for the most sensational view!
To reach the palm grove simply take a 20-minute walk along the main beach, or you can walk through the town via Matara road.
Despite its incredible beauty and ease of access, Coconut Tree Hill is one of Mirissa’s lesser-visited spots. It is especially likely to be quiet first thing in the morning, so arrive for sunset if you want the place to yourself!
