When should you visit Matara?
For the best weather
Expect high temperatures in Matara throughout the year! The average temperature in this southern Sri Lankan city fluctuates very little, hovering around 28C (82F) whatever the month. Rainfall varies dramatically in the region, however, and Matara gets especially wet in October November and December. Stay dry by visiting in January, February, March, June, July or August!
To beat the crowds
Matara is a big, bustling city and is busy throughout the year. However, unlike nearby Mirissa, not a lot of this traffic comes from tourism.
Tourism in the area only increases during the months of July and August, when a larger number of holidaymakers arrive in the city. If you’re not a fan of crowds, arrive in February, March or June. The weather at this time of year is still fine and sunny but you’re unlikely to see packed streets! If you want to go while it’s really quiet, arrive during the rainy season months of October, November or December.

Chill at Talalla Beach
Talalalla Beach is one of the best in the area for tranquil, unspoilt beauty. The picturesque sweep of sand and clear, turquoise waters of the cove are the perfect place to enjoy Sri Lanka’s stunning coastline. Talalla is generally quieter than other beaches in the area and rarely gets crowded, making it the ultimate place to relax.

Explore the ancient Matara Fort
Matara is known for its wealth of historical landmarks, and Matara Fort is one of the oldest and most impressive. This ancient stone structure can be found in the centre of Matara, where it was first constructed by the Portuguese in 1560. Matara was subsequently captured by the Dutch in 1640, and the fort was rebuilt in 1645. Today, all that remains of the original structure is the large stone rampart and the gateway, as well as a 12 m high clock tower which was added by British invaders in 1883.

Check out the Star Fort in Matara
If you can’t get enough of ancient colonial buildings, the Star Fort in Matara is definitely worth a visit. The Star Fort can be found directly opposite Matara Fort, where it was built in 1765 by Dutch colonisers. The purpose of this second, smaller fort was to provide extra protection to the main fort, which was vulnerable to attacks from the river.
The Star Fort got its name from the unique shape of its construction, which has six points and resembles a star. Each of these points would have housed two large cannons, allowing those within to defend the fort from all directions.
Today, the fort houses a small museum, where you can learn all about the history of this ancient structure. It’s fascinating architecture and colourful past make the Star Fort a must-visit in Matara. Make sure you check it out while you’re in town!
Wander around the Old Nupe Market
Built during the Dutch occupation of Sri Lanka, the Old Nupe Market is another historical landmark in Matara. This ancient, T-shaped building originally housed the Nupe Market, where people would have bought fish, vegetables, meat, textiles and household items.
Constructed during the late 18th century, the Old Nupe Market building is beautifully preserved and well-maintained. The Old Nupe Market is free to visit, so make sure you stop by for a stroll around! Today, the building is used to house the occasional local fair or exhibition, and there are a few temporary stalls dotted around. Drop by to immerse yourself in the history of Matara, and to learn more about Sri Lanka’s colourful past.
Paravi Duwa Temple
Built atop a small island just off Matara beach, this stunning Buddhist temple is definitely worth a visit while you’re in the city. The temple can be reached by crossing a small suspension bridge over the sea, which is an incredible experience in itself!
Once across the bridge, you’ll find that the views from the island are incredible. Surrounded on all sides by ocean, Paravi Duwa is an unbeatable place to breathe in some tranquillity and lose yourself in the sound of the waves.
